Postgraduate Maltese linguists participate at a workshop in Delmenhorst, Germany

Four postgraduate students from the Department of Maltese and the Institute of Linguistics & Language Technology recently read papers on Maltese linguistics at a workshop entitled Triangulation II – A plethora of ideas about language (Wales, Malta, Northwest Germany) in Delmenhorst, Germany. The workshop, which was organised by the University of Bremen, was held at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg, Institute for Advanced Study, on 5th and 6th June 2023 and was the second event of its kind, following last year’s first successful triangulation workshop.

Kirsty Azzopardi, a doctoral student in the Department of Maltese, gave a talk about “The argument structure of motion verbs in Maltese”. Raffaello Bezzina, a student who has just finalised his Masters in Maltese, spoke about “Word formation in Maltese”. Michela Vella, a doctoral student at the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology, gave a talk entitled “In the (playing) field: Maltese child language data collection”. Thomas Pace, who has also recently finalised his Masters with the Department of Maltese, presented his work about “Language use in Malta’s public administration”.

The workshop organisers were Julia Nintemann, Maike Vorholt, Deborah Arbes and Kevin Behrens from the University of Bremen, Germany. Prof. Thomas Stolz from the same university, who came up with this initiative, Prof. Ray Fabri, Head of the Maltese Delegation, and Dr. Iwan Wyn Rees, Head of the Delegation from the University of Cardiff in Wales, all contributed to this event. This opportunity for Maltese language and linguistics researchers to network with other linguists and researchers is the result of the cooperation between the Department of Maltese and the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology at the University of Malta and the branches of the Malta Centre in Malta and Bremen.
