Dizzjunarju tal-Ekonomija bil-Malti

Il-Ġimgħa 6 ta’ Ottubru 2023, fis-Sala Pietru Pawl Saydon, l-Università ta’ Malta, saret it-tnedija ta’ Dizzjunarju Speċjalizzat: Ekonomija miġbur mill-Prof. Lino Briguglio u editjat minn Dr Michael Spagnol, Thomas Pace u Dwayne Ellul; pubblikazzjoni tad-Dipartiment tal-Malti fil-Fakultà tal-Arti u tal-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ilsien Malti. Għat-tnedija, minbarra l-awtur u l-edituri, ħadu sehem erba’ ekonomisti, Dr Marie Briguglio, Dr Carl Camilleri, Dr John A. Consiglio u Dr Daniel Gravino, li ddiskutew il-kontribut tal-volum għal dan il-qasam li kulma jmur qed nisimgħu iżjed dwaru globalment fl-isferi politiċi u soċjali. Fi tmiem l-attività, qalu kelmtejn Dr Olvin Vella, il-President tal-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ilsien Malti, u l-Prof. Emanuel Said, id-Dekan tal-Fakultà tal-Ekonomija, il-Ġestjoni u l-Kontabilità (FEMA), u qamet diskussjoni stimulanti fost il-letturi, l-istudenti u l-membri tal-pubbliku preżenti.

Il-pubblikazzjoni fiha ġabra ta’ madwar 300 terminu tal-ekonomija bil-Malti u bl-Ingliż. Għal kull terminu tingħata definizzjoni qasira bil-Malti. Fost it-termini hemm kemm kliem u espressjonijiet li jintużaw fit-taħdit komuni, bħal investiment, għoli tal-ħajja u kera, kif ukoll termini tekniċi, bħal makroekonomija, indiċi tal-prezzijiet u żvalutar. Id-dizzjunarju jinkludi wkoll kliem, bħal monetariżmu, telexogħol u iperinflazzjoni, li jirrifletti żviluppi riċenti f’din id-dixxiplina. It-termini bid-definizzjonijiet u t-traduzzjonijiet qegħdin miġburin fil-portal tar-riċerka tad-Dipartiment tal-Malti www.malti.mt. Kopja diġitali tad-dizzjunarju tinsab fis-sit tal-Librerija tal-Università.

Dan id-dizzjunarju għandu l-ħsieb li jistandardizza għadd ta’ termini u hu utli mhux biss għar-riċerkaturi u l-akkademiċi tal-ekonomija imma wkoll għall-kittieba, l-għalliema tas-suġġett, il-ġurnalisti, it-tradutturi, u għal kull min jinteressah iħaddem il-Malti f’dan il-qasam.

Dizzjunarju Speċjalizzat: Ekonomija, compiled by Prof. Lino Briguglio and edited by Dr Michael Spagnol, Thomas Pace, and Dwayne Ellul, was released by the National Council for the Maltese Language and the Department of Maltese within the Faculty of Arts on Friday, 6th October 2023 at Pietru Pawl Saydon Hall, University of Malta. In addition to the author and editors, four economists—Dr Marie Briguglio, Dr Carl Camilleri, Dr John A. Consiglio, and Dr Daniel Gravino—participated in the launch. They spoke about the contribution of this specialised dictionary to a topic that is increasingly being discussed on a global scale in the political and social spheres. Dr Olvin Vella, President of the National Council for the Maltese Language, and Prof. Emanuel Said, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA), gave brief speeches at the conclusion of the activity. This was followed by a stimulating discussion between the lecturers, students, and members of the audience.

The book includes a list of economic terms in both English and Maltese, as well as brief definitions in Maltese. One can find both technical terms like makroekonomija (macroeconomics), indiċi tal-prezzijiet (price index), and żvalutar (devaluation) as well as everyday words and expressions like investiment (investment), għoli tal-ħajja (cost of living), and kera (rent). Words like monetariżmu (monetarism), telexogħol (teleworking), and iperinflazzjoni (hyperinflation)that reflect recent advancements in this field are also included in the dictionary. The research portal of the Department of Maltese, www.malti.mt, provides access to the defined terms and their respective equivalents whereas a digital copy of the dictionary can be accessed through the University Library.

This dictionary is meant to standardise a number of terms and benefits not only researchers and academics from the economic field, but also writers, economics teachers, journalists, translators, and all those making use of Maltese in this specialised area.
